Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic athlete who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reva Steenkamp last year, was scheduled for an early release this Friday, August 21, 2015. However, his liberation is now off now as Justice Minister Michael Masutha reconsiders the early exit.
“Barry Bateman of Eyewitness News in South Africa passed along the statement from Justice Minister Michael Masutha on the decision to hold off on releasing Pistorius:
Pistorius was controversially sentenced to just five years for manslaughter or culpable homicide last October. After serving 10 months of his prison term he was scheduled to be released into house arrest at his wealthy uncle’s mansion.
Prosecutors have filed papers with the South African Supreme Court of Appeal on Monday, August 17, 2015 in an effort to increase his conviction to murder which would carry a minimum of 15 years sentence.
