911 call about offensive odor leads to discovery of dead bodies in garage

August 25, 2015 – Police received a 911 call regarding a foul smell emanating from a garage in northern Philadelphia.  After police accessed the space, they discovered three dead bodies.  Two corpses were in boxes and one in a coffin.  Investigators traced the stinky stiffs to a funeral home around the corner.

Funeral home owner, Janet Powell, told police that she was aware of the bodies in the garage.  Powell refused to comment to the press as a van came by to pick up the discarded cadavers.  The stench of the dead bodies was overwhelming.

“Police said the identities of the bodies were not yet known. A law enforcement source said police were investigating abuse of a corpse allegations, and said it appeared the bodies had been left in the garage.”

This funeral home’s bad policies follows another crime involving a kidnapped corpse.  The body of 26-year-old Julie Mott was taken from the funeral home in San Antonio, TX.  Her body was last seen in her casket while she was in the Mission Park Funeral Home.
The woman’s body was abducted shortly after the funeral service.  Some believe it may have been a family member who didn’t believe in cremation.  Mott’s body was scheduled to be cremated.

The “San Antonio Police Department declared that they would consider the crime as abuse of a corpse, which is a class A misdemeanor in the state . . .punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $4,000, or both jail time and a fine.”
