On New Year's Day in 2013, Monaghan was alone with his daughter Ruby, aged 24 days, as her mother slept upstairs. He smothered the new born as she slept in a Moses basket. Eight months after Ruby's death, Laura Gray discovered that her boyfriend owed thousands of pounds in gambling debts and told him the relationship was over.Monaghan took their son, Logan, aged 21 months, to a local swimming pool in Blackburn the following day. While alone in a cubicle in the changing rooms he smothered the child. Both deaths were investigated as sudden and unexplained events, but Ruby’s death was attributed to bronchiolitis and Logan’s cause of death remained “unascertained”. In the days after Logan's death, Monaghan told the media of his “heartbreak” at losing both of his children as he posed for photos with Miss Gray, their grieving mother, telling reporters “It feels as if history is repeating itself".In January 2018, he was arrested and bailed on suspicion of murder when Lancashire Police launched a review into the children's deaths after further information came to light. He was on police bail for the child murders when he murdered his new girlfriend Evie Adams, 23, with a deadly cocktail of prescription drugs in October 2019. Monaghan then faked a suicide note from Miss Adams, discovered apparently by chance falling out of a picture frame as he removed the couple’s favourite photo of themselves to place in her coffin.Construction worker Monaghan was rearrested in January this year and charged with all three murders, before being convicted of the killings following a 10-week trial at Preston Crown Court in December. The judge called him "an exceptionally controlling, selfish and cruel man". He was also convicted of two counts of attempted murder in relation to a third child who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
