In 1896, construction began on the Uganda Railway starting from Mombasa and cutting west through dense bush, rocky escarpments, swamps, and unfamiliar terrain to the shores of Lake Victoria. The work was gruelling and the men suffered from horrible diseases, lack of food and water and terrible living conditions. And then they began disappearing in the night and soon work ground to a halt completely.
