On Christmas Eve in Fayetteville, West Virginia, in 1945, a tragedy and a mystery occurred that changed the community and, to this day, has not been solved or explained. That night, the home of the Sodder family burned to the ground. The family was made up of George and Jennie Sodder and their 10 children: John (22), Marion (19), Joe (17), George Jr. (16), Maurice (14), Martha (12), Louis (9), Jennie (8), Betty (5), and Sylvia (3). George, Jennie, and four of their children escaped. Joe was actively in the military and therefore was not home that night. The other five presumably died in the fire, but the family wasnât so sure.
