During late July 2019, Epstein was found semi-conscious in his cell with marks on his neck in what authorities called his first suicide attempt. Surveillance footage from outside his cell, recorded on July 22–23 of that year, was said to capture the event or circumstances around it. However, prosecutors later disclosed that the footage “no longer exists” — it was lost or deleted, purportedly due to a technical or clerical error involving preservation of video from the wrong tier.The disappearance of that video has been heavily criticized by legal observers, investigators, and conspiracy theorists alike.
