McLean, VA (April 1, 2025) - On December 28, 1990, Muncie (IN) Patrolman Gregg Winters arrested a man for public intoxication. The man was sitting in the back of Patrolman Muncie’s police vehicle, on his way to jail, when he pulled a concealed handgun and shot the 32-year-old husband and father of two in the back of the head and neck. At his trial, the cold-blooded cop killer, spouted one excuse after another. He blamed his actions on being drunk, saying, “It’s a tragic situation, a situation that never should have happened. It was totally out of character.” The jury didn’t buy it. He was convicted of the murder, sentenced to death and was executed in 2007. After Gregg’s death, his wife, Molly, raised her two sons, Kyle and Brock, and became an outspoken advocate for the survivors of officers killed in the line of duty. She went on to become the national president for C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors). She also has refused to let Gregg be forgotten. After his death, she wrote a letter that was published in the local newspaper. In it she said, “Gregg was no ordinary man; he was unique. He would pass up ball games and nights out with the guys to stay home with me and our two sons.” She also thanked him “for giving over 150 percent each time [Gregg] patrolled the streets of Muncie.” Listen to the podcast for more details.Citizens Behind the Badge now communicates through Substack!
