Colorado Springs saw multiple notable criminal incidents over the previous week. Early Saturday morning in downtown, near the central business district, officers responded to a disturbance involving a group argument in a parking lot. Security footage later revealed a man fitting the description from a prior 911 call, reportedly in possession of a firearm, with a white T-shirt and orange hat. The individual was confronted by police after returning to the scene, and when ordered to surrender, he fled and appeared to reach for his waistband. Officers pursued and issued further commands before one officer fired three shots, striking the suspect at least once. Medical aid was attempted on-site but the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Alex Martinez-Sarmiento, was pronounced dead. Police recovered one firearm from the suspect and another from his vehicle; the suspect was on parole and not legally permitted to possess firearms. The incident remains under investigation by the El Paso County Sheriffâs Office and will be reviewed by the 4th Judicial District Attorneyâs Office according to The Gazette. On June 12 in the Stratton Meadows area, a former elementary school teacher identified as 66-year-old Matthew Gogan was arrested on two counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, following an investigation by the Crimes Against Children Unit that began in April. Police are actively seeking additional information from the public, as investigators believe there may be more victims connected to this case. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719-444-7000 or Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP, as reported by CBS Colorado. This weekâs cases illustrate two significant trends: continued firearm-related violence in the downtown area and a focus on investigating alleged child sexual assault cases involving persons in positions of trust.
