During the previous week in Omaha, Nebraska, several notable criminal and safety incidents were reported across city neighborhoods. In South Central Omaha near the Muse apartments, law enforcement executed coordinated operations stemming from an alleged methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. On December 14, 2023, a confidential source arranged a controlled purchase of approximately 0.38 kilograms of methamphetamine delivered by a courier driving a Mazda. This was followed by a second controlled buy on January 5, 2024, resulting in the purchase of nearly half a kilogram of methamphetamine, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for Nebraska. Surveillance of a residence near 27th and Hazel streets on January 10, 2024, connected the Mazda and its driver, Cazarez-Quintero, to another local dealer. A subsequent search warrant led to the seizure of three pounds of methamphetamine from the 27th and Hazel residence. The following day, officers observed Cazarez-Quintero returning to the Muse apartment complex; a search at that location turned up approximately 56 pounds of methamphetamine as well as more than $17,000 in cash. Authorities report the case has moved to sentencing, with the Omaha Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration concluding the investigation. Anyone with additional information or tips related to this operation is encouraged to contact Amy Donato at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, phone number (402) 661-3700.Moving northwest of Omaha, on the south edge of neighboring Fremont, first responders were called to the Horizon Biofuels wood pellet manufacturing plant on Tuesday following a major explosion just before noon. The explosion, audible for blocks and reported by nearby residents, produced heavy fire and smoke, hampering search and rescue operations. According to Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg and Fire Chief Todd Bernt, three individuals were unaccounted for and presumed to have been inside the building at the time of the incident. Initial reports indicate storage of wood and alcohol-based materials as potential hazards. As of the last update, structural instability and heavy flames have prevented first responders from entering the scene to conduct a full search for the missing persons. The situation remains under investigation as emergency crews, the state patrol, and other agencies work to secure the site and protect community safety.Across the city, police continue efforts to address drug-related crime and cooperate with federal investigators targeting large-scale narcotics operations. No major violent assaults, shootings, or homicides were reported in city neighborhoods during this period. Law enforcement maintains high visibility and requests public cooperation in reporting suspicious activity. No suspect descriptions are being actively released for ongoing investigations this week; when needed, police will update the public and request assistance.Listeners should observe increased attention to narcotics activity in central neighborhoods and the elevated hazard of structural fires in adjacent industrial areas. Residents are urged to report tips by contacting the Omaha Police non-emergency line or relevant agency as listed in each case.Thank you for tuning in.
