Episode 9

Dr Harold Shipman is the bleak spectre of modern medicine and remains the only doctor in British history convicted of murdering his patients. His many victims were mostly female and elderly, though he was not above killing men and in one instance, a young child. He was eventually charged with killing fifteen by poisoning with morphine. But this was only after a remarkable and unprecedented police investigation. His undoing came with the murder of Kathleen Grundy who was exhumed on police orders with the toxicologist reporting that Mrs Grundy's body contained a lethal dose of morphine and death would have occurred within three hours of the fatal dose. Shipman did not know that morphine remains in the body for many years and has in fact been identified in the bodies of ancient mummies. In this episode, we look at that fateful event that led to his arrest and the trial that followed.Presenters: Dr Harry Brunjes & Dr Andrew JohnsProducer: Philip WildingEditor: Chelsey MooreSound Design: John ScottProduction Manager: Vittoria CecchiniA Daily Mail production.
