John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry and a Kentucky Gun Maker John Brown was an American abolitionist. Brown, who said that speeches, sermons, and petitions were accomplishing nothing, that "moral suasion is hopeless", saw violence as unfortunately necessary if slavery in the United States were to be eliminated. Benjamin Mills was a well known gun maker that spent most of his career building rifles in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.  After the Civil War he moved his business from Harrodsburg to Lexington, Kentucky and continued to build rifles, shotguns, and pistols.
